Our library supports not only the official and formal education, but offers valuable services for those interested in studying in the out of school system or for those having intention to learn independently.
We attach primary attention to teach ICT competencies and to ensure the necessary infrastructure accordingly. We would like to help people to
- be informed not only from the traditional sources, but in the world of the new electronic information carriers
- be digitally literate and develop their skills
- access more diverse learning possibilities
- have access to the necessary facilities and use the Internet
In order to achieve our objectives, we offer several new services.
Katona József Library runs classes on the use of the Internet.
INFOSULI (Infoschool)
We would like to help mostly the adults who have not had any opportunity to become digitally literate, at least at a basic level, but they need it badly.
About the service:
- It is accessible for anybody who registers at Katona József Library and is older than 16.
- The 30-hour-courses are organised in different time and according several timetables. Enrolment is in the library.
- The tuition fee of INFOSULI is HUF 8.000,-. For seniors we make a reduction, so they pay a contribution of HUF 4.000,-.
In INFOSULI you can learn the following:
- basic knowledge of the use of the Internet
- communication by e-mail
- information retrieval from databases, online web sites
- use of e-administration services
The courses are conducted by qualified staff-members of the library. Computers are at the disposal of the learners, for the individual practise, during the opening hours, too.
According to the public need, we offer the following schedule of the courses:
10 lessons: 2 X 3 hours / week (on weekdays 10:00 - 13:00)
6 lessons: 1 X 5 hours / week (on Monday 9:00 – 13:00)
Information about the division in groups can be asked for at Infotheque service unit.
The 12-person groups form in order of appearance.

Gateway UK

Goethe-Institut
A Goethe-Institut Németország hivatalos kulturális intézete, mely a világ számos országában működik. Célja, hogy elősegítse a német nyelv elsajátítását és a nemzetközi kulturális együttműködést. Emellett információkat közvetít a kulturális, társadalmi és politikai életről. A Goethe-Institut Budapest 1988 óta működik Budapesten.

A Katona József Könyvtár 1998 óta működik együtt a Goethe-Institut Budapesttel és egyike az intézmény hivatalos partnerkönyvtárainak.

NAVA Point in our library
The National Audiovisual Archive (NAVA) collects the legal deposit copies of the Hungarian programme service. The mission of the institute is to store, process and ensure access to the programmes with Hungarian content as well as the programmes produced in Hungary and transmitted via the analogue terrestrial channels of the Hungarian television and radio. The access is guaranteed in several NAVA service points throughout the country.
NAVA provides also access to the digital copy of one hundred Hungarian feature films and several hundreds Hungarian newsreels produced during the period of 1931-1943 about international events of that time.
Direct access to the collection of legal deposit copies
These are television and radio programmes with Hungarian content and programmes produced in Hungary, all broadcast from January 1, 2006 on M1, M2, Duna TV, RTL Klub, TV2 and 3 channels of Magyar Rádió.
Separate collections: Gramofon online
This is a collection of 78rpm records. The collection consists of some two thousand phonograph records from 1906-1916 and they can be listened to easily from home.
Feature films, exam films, scientific lectures, Mediawave
This is a series of growing collections of films. It is possible to watch free of charge the exam films of Színház- és Filmművészeti Egyetem (Hungarian University of Theatre and Film Arts) from home. Other parts are as follows: 100 Hungarian feature films from 1941-1981, films of Mediawave Festival and university lectures of “Mindentudás Egyeteme” (i.e. university of all knowledge) (2002-2006).
Thematic collections
These are the television programmes in the NAVA collection, arranged in different groups (cultural and human values, topicalities, etc.) and being accessible easily.
Collection of newsreels
While processing this collection, keywords from the field of education and historical research were also given to these newsreels produced between 1931-1943, what is more, each spoken word of their text is searchable.
The rich collection of these programmes provides a unique possibility of having a good time and doing research work. In our library it is possible to watch the programmes on modern multimedia computers.

Preparation for the ECDL exam
Prepare yourself in our library for the ECDL exam
We provide you with the possibility to learn on your own, to use our computers equipped with the necessary programs and the training curriculum.
On the first floor of the library there is an area for self-study with modern PC-s for our readers wishing to pass an ECDL exam.
In addition to the training curriculum for the use on the spot, there is a growing collection of specialized textbooks in the lending stock.
The service is only for our registered readers.

Service of monitoring calls for proposals
By order and for a fee, we undertake to monitor different calls for proposals both in the dailies and the periodicals in our collection and in the journals accessible in the Internet. This service is offered mostly for local governments. We collect every call announced by the state, the local governments, legal entities (foundation, research institutes, etc.) or private individuals in connection with the following:
-public education, culture, science
-scholarship
-public health, welfare policies
-infrastructure (support of development and investments)
-protection of nature and the environment
-calls for local governments
-economic ventures that might be important for the local governments in our county (e.g. offer for investments in tourism)
-other (what the customer, apart from the above, considers to be important)
The price of this service depends on the frequency and the form of the transmission of the calls, i.e. photocopy, e-mail or post.

Compilation of bibliography
With this service we can help you to be well up in a subject and to write a school exercise, a paper, etc. If you need the specialist literature of a particular area of science not only once, in the reading rooms you can ask for the compilation of a bibliography, while filling in a form and answering questions as follows:
-specify the subject and the question
-to what are you in need of the bibliography
-what type of resources do you want to use (books, periodicals, other documents)
-in what languages (Hungarian, English, German, etc.) is the specialist literature necessary
-resources from which years would be appropriate
-how many items are needed
-how will you ask about the answer

The International IMPAC DUBLIN Literary Award
Az International DUBLIN Literary Award-hoz könyvtárunk 2002 óta küld jelöléseket. Természetesen igyekszünk felkutatni és jelölni a magyar szerzők angol megjelenésű regényeit, hiszen mi vagyunk az egyetlen magyar könyvtár a nemzetközi mezőnyben.
A díjat 1994-ben alapította Dublin város, 1996-ban adták ki először, azóta évente választják ki a nyertest a könyvtárak ajánlásai alapján. A jelölés feltétele, hogy az adott könyvnek angolul is meg kell jelennie. A díj magas jutalommal, 100 ezer euróval jár, melyet a szerző és az esetleges fordító kap.

Small study room
On the second floor where you can find the two reading rooms, there is also a small room reserved for those doing research and having the intention to use our collection and the databases only accessible on the spot during long periods of time, continually and intensively. Only validly registered members of the library may make use of this small room. A written agreement between the member requiring the room and the library should be concluded. The documents used here, in this one-person study, can be left here until the end of the researcher’s work.
